An Imperial Affection: Ridge Vinyards 2012 Monte Bello
Produced by Ridge Vineyards, the 2012 Monte Bello is the namesake for the original Monte Bello Winery, which was established on the first 180 acres of Monte Bello Ridge that is now home to Ridge Vineyards. Deriving from one of Ridge’s eighteen vineyards—the Monte Bello—this exceptional wine is made up of several varietals: 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. The 2012 vintage has received accolades across the board, notably 98 points from Antonio Galloni at Vinous Media, 96 points from William Kelley at The Wine Advocate and 96 points from Decanter.
Osea Perrone, a prominent member of San Francisco’s Italian community, first purchased the180 acres once known as Monte Bello in 1885. In 1962, Monte Bello officially became Ridge Vineyards . Primarily known for its single vineyard reds, Ridge produces organic, sustainable wines at 2,600 feet in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Using what they refer to as a “pre-industrial” approach to winemaking, Ridge does not use modern additives or industrial processing. Instead, they work with native yeasts rather than cultured yeast strains and extract color, flavor, and tannins from the grapes without the use of commercial enzymes or nutrients.
